What formulas does this calculator use?

This side hustle calculator uses six formulas, all listed here so you can check them or run them on paper. A month is 52 weeks divided by 12, which is 4.33 weeks. Nothing is estimated for you: every result comes from the six numbers you enter.

  • Hours a month = hours per week × 52 ÷ 12
  • Effective hourly rate = (monthly profit − fixed costs) ÷ hours a month
  • Typing hours a month = listings per week × minutes per listing × 52 ÷ 12 ÷ 60
  • Time per listing = hours per week × 60 ÷ listings per week
  • Time per listing in dollars = day-job rate × hours per week ÷ listings per week
  • Hours back for one minute cut from every listing = listings per week × 52 ÷ 12 ÷ 60

With the starting numbers ($600 profit, $45 fixed costs, 8 hours a week, a $28 day-job rate, 12 listings, 5 minutes each): 34.67 hours a month, $16.01 an hour, 4.3 hours a month typing listings, 40 minutes per listing worth $18.67 at the day-job rate, and 0.9 hours back for each minute cut.

Which hours should you count in a reselling side hustle?

Count every hour a reselling side hustle takes, including the hours that don't feel like work. The drive, the washing, the messages and the price checks all belong in the total. Undercounting hours is the easiest way to flatter the hourly rate, and it's an error you won't notice from inside it. The full list:

  • Driving to and from sourcing, not only the time inside stores
  • Washing, steaming, repairing and measuring
  • Photos, and moving them to wherever you list from
  • Writing and publishing listings
  • Packing, printing labels, and the trip to the post office
  • Messages, offers, returns and cases
  • Checking sold prices, which feels like browsing and still counts

How much of your week goes to typing listings?

Typing listings is the one block of a reselling week that grows with every item. By FlowLister's own count, an experienced seller takes 4 to 7 minutes to type one eBay listing by hand, before any price research (flowlister.com/list-ebay-items-fast/, read September 23, 2026). Enter your listings per week and your own minutes, and the calculator shows the hours a month and your share of the week.

Every minute you cut from each listing gives back the hours in the last box. Faster typing, templates and AI listing tools all cut that number. Count any tool's price as a fixed cost and time your own review. A listing evening, worked through in minutes, is in how many listings fit in an evening.

How do you read your hourly rate?

Read your hourly rate against what else the hours could earn. A rate below your day-job rate isn't automatically a reason to stop: reselling builds a skill and a stock of live listings, and an hour of overtime doesn't. But it should be a trade you make on purpose.

Watch the direction more than the level. Re-run this every quarter. If the rate is flat while the hours grow, you're buying income with time, and the fix is usually more listings per hour, not more hours. If the rate is low, the four inputs behind reseller income show which one to move.

When is the hourly rate reliable?

The hourly rate is reliable from about month four. Early rates are held down by two things at once: an unfamiliar process, and stock that's been bought but hasn't sold yet. Both correct themselves. The first 90 days covers what to measure when, and is reselling worth it covers what to do with the answer.

How do I calculate my side hustle hourly rate?
Take monthly profit, subtract fixed costs like subscriptions and storage, and divide by monthly hours: weekly hours times 52 divided by 12, about 4.33. Count every hour, including driving, washing, photos, packing and messages.
What hours should I count for a reselling side hustle?
All of them: sourcing and driving, cleaning and repairs, measuring, photos, writing, publishing, packing, post office trips, messages and returns, and checking sold prices. Price research is easy to leave out because it feels like browsing.
Is it bad if my side hustle pays less per hour than my job?
Not necessarily. Reselling also builds a skill, a stock of live listings and a business you own. But it should be a deliberate trade. The more useful signal is whether the rate rises from quarter to quarter.
What does time per listing mean?
Time per listing is your weekly hours divided by the listings you add each week, so it includes sourcing, prep, photos and shipping as well as typing. At your day-job rate it shows what the time behind each listing is worth. Items that sell need to net more than that, because the ones that don't sell used the same time.
Does this calculator save my numbers?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.

Disclosure Evening Inventory comes from the people who build FlowLister, so read it knowing that. FlowLister is aimed at the part of the evening this site keeps telling you to protect: from your item photos it fills in the title, category and item specifics, sets a price from sold listings and adds shipping, then you publish to eBay in one click. It's AI and it gets things wrong. Everything here works without it.
